Hello, my name is Makayla and I am in the 5th grade. I am doing a science project on how would your plant grow if you gave it soda, tea or coffee. I was wondering if someone could tell me why the plant that I gave coffee to grew and the other plants are started to die. The plant that I used is the Dieffenbachia 'Camille'.

    Thankyou

    Hello Makayla,

Generally, we don't answer student questions on these forums, because we have the philosophy of letting students make the discoveries / research the topics for themselves.

I'll give you a few things to investigate, but please realize that these may or may not have anything to do with the mortality of your plants - you'll have to do the investigation yourself:

    1) Broadly, do any of the liquids have chemicals in them that help or harm the plants?
    2) More specifically, do any of the liquids act as a fertilizer?
    3) And again specifically, do any of the liquids affect the pH (acidity / alkalinity) of the soil to the extent that it changes the preferred soil pH of Dieffenbachia?

    Good luck.
