I have a pencil cactus growing in doors. A cutting was taken from a very large pencil cactus growing in my yard. It stands about three feet high and I have had it potted for seven months. It had been doing fine until maybe two months ago, new growth, etc. I travel and perhaps don't pay close enough attention to it but I started finding dried up stems on the floor. I repotted it today into a larger pot, 16", and with closer inspection noticed what I fear is scale very prevalent on the lower stems. I have been spritzing it with water and wiping as much of the little light brown "bumps" off as possible. Is this scale and what should I do next? thanks, rpy

Dab at them with a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol. Keep it up and you will eventually get them.
