    Bloodroot. Here, it's the first showy native flower to bloom.

    Thanks! plants.usda.gov says it's found in the eastern 2/3 of the U.S. I don't know of a similar reference for Canada. It's abundant here in the woods. Sometimes on shady roadsides.
