    Hi Alex,

yes, I am growing both of these. It is just called "Eddisbury", NOT "Sango Kaku Eddisbury."

Eddisbury is tougher than SK. It is less prone to sun burn. The leaves debut darker, giving the plant in early spring a somewhat somber (though attractive) appearance. As they mature the leaves are more mat than SK, somewhat more heavily toothed and have a less delicate texture. The mid-summer new growth is a fine dark red which contrasts nicely with the green background. Fall color here is a slightly darker orange than the yellow of SK. It lasts well.

The red bark is easily the equal of Sango Kaku. New growth is also a good red.

I don't seem to have many pictures of Eddisbury, but here is one from this year just at the beginning of fall color.

    HTH,

I have 'Eddisbury' from Esveld in the ground for 4 years now.It is a real disappointment in terms of bark color: a pinkish green in the winter, otherwise is a nice green palmatum.
'Sango kaku' is, for me, a name given just to any red bark palmatum. I have 4 or 5 of them from different suppliers and they are all different in leaf shape and, specially, bark color with some coral red, some yellow red and some almost no red.

    Hi Gomero,

Interesting, I agree Eddisbury is a little more salmon then SK, but mine holds color very well. Exposition? Mine gets lots of sun... On the other hand yours has better provenance. Mine is from a (pretty good) local nursery, I didn't inquire where they got it from. Almost certainly Holland, perhaps Esveld.

No doubt there is a certain element of grex in SK. None the less the 3 I now have (I lost one last winter, the one from Esveld as it happens) are remarkably alike. The main difference is the one in a pot (to be planted this spring in fact) has smaller leaves.

So I'm sure there are many cases, especially in the US, where red barked plants are improperly labeled Sango kaku. Still I'd hope that there is still a "real" SK available in Europe from folks like the Van Gelderens, Ms. Junker, Mr van der Maat or Mr Harris. And Eddisbury, as a newer cultivar, I'd expect to be less diluted.

Have you got your fall colors yet? Most maple leaves fallen here by now, we had a pretty hard frost this morning.

    cheers,

    -E

The fall colours are starting here in ernest now Emery. Unfortunately the trees are no sooner getting a great colour than the winds take them and next day I have bare branches
Interestingly (to me) is that Aconitifolium has been remarkable this year (you posted elsewhere about you admiration for its fall colour) (I have pics on another post) and succeeded holding onto its leaves quite well until yesterday
This is another pic I got before all was lost for another year .......

Funny old year, colors almost finished here, Sam just getting started... I've a couple like Osakazuki hanging in, and griseum just getting going, but most of the palmatums are nude. japonicum Vitifolium still on display, but Aconitifolium down to the last leaf.

Anyway it must be winter, I've had the kids clean the mulcher, ready to move the Kubota to winter hauling duties. ;)

Maybe, it gets 4-5 hrs of sun/day.

Not really: the japonicums are just beginning to have some leaves colored, no palmatums, sieboldianum yes, very nice. And none of the others.
On the other hand the cornus, viburnum and hammamelis are wonderful with intense colors and no storms over here (and no rain either, I am still with the automatic watering on) so the leaves remain for some days in the plants.

Well I have 4 SK. Their behavior in this area is pretty similar as described in several books, except maybe for the time of the year to change colors (leaves and bark). Here, I enjoy "fall" colors during january (almost in the middle of winter season) and then during february they drop the leaves. They start again to resprout about later march. Also I have to note that ussually they lost almost all their leaves due the heavy summer, but they send a new set of leaves during september/octuber. (the 2nd pic shows these new leaves now).

Here are some pics in diferent seasons: spring, summer and fall/winter.
