I am looking to purchase one or two large Sago palms and live in the Vancouver BC area. I have two babies now and would like to enjoy some larger ones. Can anyone help me out ? Thanks in Advance.
Sagos are not common here, most of what is available in the way of large palms are windmill palms (Trachycarpus fortunei) as they are rather hardy. Anything else is uncommon and hard to get. You could try contacting the Pacific Northwest Palm & Exotic Plant Society (PNWP&EPS) - located in Vancouver - for possible sources; sometimes they have some really nice big palms available during their online or spring sale - I got a nice 3gal sago about 2 years ago this way. http://www.hardypalm.com/ Or you could try contacting Mike at Montreal Palms. He usually has a good selection of unusual palms, and I have never been disappointed by this plants. However shipping from Montreal can be pricey as it will depend upon size and height (anything over 48" and you run into problems because no courier will handle it, not even Canada Post.....and this I know from experience). http://montrealplants.com/ As for Ebay, you will not find anything on Ebay.ca but you will most definitely find something on Ebay.com. However, do not try to bring in palms from the US as a phytosanitary certificate is required for all palm trees and without this paperwork it will never make it across the border.....and I have to yet to find anyone on Ebay offering the certificate (trust me, I have researched bringing tropical/exotic plants into Canada for over a year now and it is a very difficult thing to do). Good luck
Thanks for the info but I was hoping that I could find some locally. If anyone would like to help a guy out it would be appreciated ! :-)
In case you're still looking there's one at Art Knapp Urban Garden in Vancouver. The plant is in the clearance area, marked down to around $100. The base of the plant is the size of a pineapple. I didn't notice a botanical name on the label. You may want to give them a call for more information.
home depot in burnaby regularly has them in the summer in the indoor/tropical plants section. Try around june or july. WAY cheaper than Art Knapps
