I have added several new sabal seedlings to the garden this spring. All were planted as 2 inch seedlings. I am trying S. Lousiana(far left in 1st photo), S. Emerald Isle giant(middle in 1st photo), S. Tamaulipas(far right in 1st photo), and S. McCurtain(2 in 2nd photo). So far this summer the Tamaulipas has grown much faster than the rest with the McCurtain not too far behind. Louisiana and Emerald Isle have grown some but show some browning on some leaves. In pots (3rd photo) I have an unknown Sabal(likely) that I brought back from the Bahamas this January. Declared...of couse(not)! This palm was only a couple of inches tall and has erupted for me this summer. I plan to winter over in the greenhouse and maybe plant out next year, then cross my fingers! Behind this one is 5 pots of sabal palmettos for next years planting. Nothing ventured, nothing gained!
Sabals are great! They love the heat and moisture during Summer. If you ever get over to Banana Joe's, ask him if he has any S. 'Birmingham'. This one is by far and away the fastest Sabal I have. Trunking too! Cheers, LPN.
