Alex, did you figure out what's wrong with Drummondii? I went and looked at A. platanoides 'Princeton Gold' this afternoon, found similar black discolouration around the bottom of the trunk. In one place the cambium had clearly died and the bark was healing around the edges, but a pretty large surface looks to be problematic.

I need to decide whether to stick with P.G. or replace it, I suppose, as it was in it's first year. Expensive tree, though... :(

Really sorry to hear how special this tree is; I hope it will pull through. I'm always afraid to plant trees for people, children or otherwise, because I'm convinced I will for sure kill them in that circumstance. :)

I know you love the Drummondii, as do I. I have a pair guarding one of the gates in the fence to the main yard, they really light up the whole area.

I have no such emotional attachment to Princeton Gold, but I thought it was a pretty tree and easy: didn't expect any problems. I'm confused because it has set very good buds already, looking at the top part of the tree you wouldn't guess it is sick.
