I have grown roses for a number of years with success. Last summer due to renovations I had to move the roses when they had just started to bud. We live in the North Okanagan. They were moved to an area of semi shade and seemed to do o.k. The renos were finished in the hottest part of the summer and the roses were moved back at that time. I trimmed them back a bit and they seemed to do fine but did not bloom. They seemed to winter over well and after trimming them this spring they started to grow and HAVEN'T STOPPED!!! They grow long leggy stalks with no buds, I have tried trimming them somewhat during the summer----still not blooms but lots of long leggy stuff!!! I have never had this problem before and hope someone can give me answers or ideas. I don't know if the moves were too much of a shock, or if they did not winter over well and if this is what they do when they revert back to their original root stock. They are not suckers as they are growing off the lump above the roots and they have 5 leaves on each stalk, not 7. Thank you in advance if there are answers out there.
Not all roses have 5 leaves. Some roses (meaning the kind that you wanted to plant, not just the rose of the rootstock) have 7 leaves. That said, you did say that the new leggy shoots were from above the graft mark. Do you fertilize your lawn? Sometimes if blooming plants have lawn fertilizer run off into their beds they go crazy with growing leaves (doing what you'd want your grass to do) and seem to forget about blooming. I'd give them another season to see if they were just having a crazy year. Maybe they'll come back to their right mind next summer!
Thank you for a quick answer. I don't put anything on the lawn so that isn't the problem. I thought the same thing, give them another year and see what happens.
