I was told this was a rose of sharon bush, but the leaves seem to be too thin from others that I've seen. I'm new to all this and wanting to learn. If it's not rose of sharon, what would it be? Thanks Nancy
Aralia elegantissima-though I think it has been placed in another genera now. http://toptropicals.com/cgi-bin/gar...legantissima&number=10&user=tt&sale=1&first=1
Thanks for the reply! However I don't think it's an Aralia since they have a metallic leaf and the plant I have green leaves with a red stem. Or am I looking at this wrong. The shape of the leaves are very similar.
I'd agree yours isn't Dizygotheca elegantissima (previously Aralia elegantissima). Not sure what it is, though. Edit: Second thoughts - check out Hibiscus cannabinus (Kenaf)
Think Michael F is probably right. Unless it is the real thing!!! Didn't know that there was such a Hibiscus. And I have been accused of growing a 50 foot pot tree!!! Lyonothamus floribundus asplenifolius in my front yard! Maybe we need a thread on look-alikes!!
WOW, thanks everyone. I wanted a Rose of Sharon but it looks like I got a different Hibiscus. I did some research this morning and I think I found what I got. Looks like a Hibiscus coccineus. What do you think? http://plants.usda.gov/java/profile?symbol=HICO2
I think that has a different leaf. Your plant will probably flower later, then you will know. Somebody calling it Rose of Sharon because of similar flowers probably is the case here.
yah its a Texas hibiscus.. native to texas..in illinois we have a few in marshy areas they have red blooms, but the blooms aren't filled out all the way, the petals have a sort of a space between them, they get about 6-7 feet tall at mature height, very hardy.. have fun w/ it!
