I am trying to root grapevines. I have made cuttings, wounded the ends, dipped them in water and hormone powder, then planted them in pots with a layer of soil on the bottom, and a taller layer of vermiculite on top. It is turning to fall here in Atlanta, and I'm wondering if it is best to leave them outside on the shady deck, or put them in the garage where it is darker. What do you suggest?

Hey from a fellow Atlantan. I started muscadines last year and they are well and growing, and bearing (not that <<I>> get any berries!), so maybe I got lucky. But I did as you.

I put them outside in a very sheltered spot. No direct wind, no sitting directly on concrete. They had a southern exposure of morning sun. That's about all I can tell you. I didn't think they were going to make it (during the winter, they look so dead!), but I did make sure they had water at least once a week.

    Good luck.

Thank you so much for the advice! Since I posted the question, I have moved the pots inside the shed, but they are sitting on concrete, so I'm glad you mentioned that. I'll fix that right away. My deck does get some direct wind, so probably the shed is better. I'm happy to hear your grapes are doing well, and that the birds are enjoying them. I imagine that will happen at my house too, should I be so lucky. Thanks for your help.
