I have a few maples that are in 2 gallon containers that are roughly 5 feet tall and pulling them out show that it's full and trying to exit the bottom...What's the feeling on reducing roots to keep the container size you want?
Root pruning is a common and necessary practice with containerized trees. I would wait till fall to undertake the job. I believe there is a thread that discusses root pruning and a video from Taunton Gardening detailing the process.
