Hello, I purchased a grafted cactus about 2 years ago. About 6 months ago, the grafted, colorful (red) part died. Shortly after if died, the cactus began growing limbs. However the one limb began growing these long branch/root looking structures. Does anyone know what these are and should I be alarmed? Needless to say, my cactus gets much more attention from visitors now-a-days! Thanks Jeff
Aerial roots. There is a fancier name for them, but I have forgotten it. They are used for climbing and to suck up water/nutrients from places high up. They are not harmful of course, but they can be cut off if they become annoyingly big.
of course, that makes sense. Does their existence indicate a need for more frequent watering? Also, would it be wise to cut off the large out-growings and plant them in their own pots? Is it possible that the main cactus isn't able to provide them with enough water on its own? Thanks!
I recognize the word, could be the one I was looking for, thanks. Lots of questions! I have seen them more often on plants growing in low light. Your plant seems to do that, as seen on the etioliated part. I think it depends more on that than on the watering. I would. It will look better without the dead, grafted cactus. The aerial roots can be used for rooting. Then the plant body can be kept dry longer, giving it time to heal. I doubt it, it looks big enough and seems to have plenty of moisture.
thanks for answering all my questions. I bet you are right about it being more to do with lighting. Where the cactus is now is away from the east window where it was PRIOR to the aerial roots showing up. I moved the plants to protect them from the cats who are always jumping up on the window sills. Might have to re-think their position a bit. Thanks again!
