I am not an effective gardener which is why I use forums so here I go exposing my lack of knowledge yet again.
I have just bought a fairly large number of perennial plants and when I started to plant them I found that the pots were what I thought to be rather full of root. What is one supposed to do with these plants, soak them and loosen the roots or just dig a hole and bung them in?

Herbaceous (non-woody) plants have the roots left undisturbed at planting. It is woody trees and shrubs where you want to pull them open and get them re-oriented at planting.
