    Hello,

I'm new to gardening, having just bought my first house. In my zeal, I planted a sweet little Rose Glow Barberry in my front garden. Then I fell in love with a beautiful Tiger Eyes Sumac and plopped that in the bed just a meter-and-a-half away from it. Now I'm afraid they are going to look so odd together. Can anyone suggest something that will make the transition between the two less jarring?

Or am I just a cowardly custard?

Later there probably isn't going to be any room left between them, except perhaps for a tree with most growth above the height of the other two. Otherwise something grayish or silvery would look well with both the yellowishness of the 'Bailtiger' and the purplishness of the 'Rose Glow'. (Tiger Eyes is a trademark used to sell the 'Bailtiger' cultivar, 'Rose Glow' is a cultivar. Cultivars are distinguished by presenting them in quotes).

they're both going to be decent-sized and, as ron said, at some point there won't be any room in between.

i'd move one of them now (or in the spring) while it's at a manageable size.

Aha, thanks Ron for the information about cultivars and trademarks!

Well, I imagined that the canopy of the tree would grow above the bulk of the barberry. Originally the barberry was even closer and my husband was quite unhappy about moving it the first time, so I'll look for somethng gray or silver to fill the space while I wait and see what happens.

I never realized until we moved to Ontario what a gardening advantage living in Vancouver gave us. All I had there was a large window box on the balcony, but geraniums and my cooking herbs overwintered with no problems. I'll sure miss having rosemary all winter long.

Yes: Very much colder there. Different summer, too. Vancouver etc. significantly milder than the rest of the country.

Rose Glow Barberry is a pretty plant indeed, in spite of your concerns for how the plants will look good together. Hope all goes well.
