Hi. I live on SaltSpring Island. I would like to build a carport and plant a garden on top. I have two carports in mind. One I would like to put grasses and flowers in to attract birds and bees. The other more for vegetables. Is there information available in the Victoria or Vancouver area? I have done a search and haven't had much luck. Perhaps there is a workshop or someone has built a structure. Roger
Try a search on the topic of green roofs. I found quite a bit that could be applied to rooftop gardens. I guess the main issues are: can the structure hold the weight of plants, soil and water; and in times of drought (like now) how do you get water to the garden and keep it watered. keke
Hi.I found one firm on Vancouver Island by Shawnigan Lake . He was more into supplying containers with pregrown plants for the roofs. I've been to a couple of Home Shows looking for information but the focus seems t be more on Hot Tubs. I have a rough idea what is required just need the specs. perhaps in a phamplet form. One idea I had re watering is to look for an inexpensive large storage container to collect rain water. When I mentioned the idea to a salesman he said it would take years to justify the purchase of a water tank vs the difference in the cost of using our home water. Coquitlam, many fond childhood memories as I lived at 756 Rochester Road until in my later teens. Thanks for the reply. Roger
Hi. I have no experience of green roofs but there is an oceanside development near us which was advertised as "green" and invironmentally friendly. All of the roofs are planted. It might be interesting to you further investigate how they were designed and also how they are surviving the drought. The developers were Wakefield Homes and the development is in West Sechelt on the Sunshine Coast. Good luck Margaret
Margaret, I had no luck finding the development in West Sechelt. I called a relator who suggested I was just on a fishing trip. I was directed by a woman at the local recycling looking at garden magazines to check out the University in Duncan as they had incorporated a green roof in their building design. That lead to B.C.I.T. Green Roofs T.V. www.greenroofs.com. A wealth of information and I apologize for the lat post but there is a lecture at building in Great Northern Way , 2nd and Main @ 9am this Saturday Oct. 13 2012. I also met a salesman at Van Isle Water in Victoria that gave me the name of an Architect in the Victoria area to consult with re green roofs. Something going on at Mayne Island around Oct. 20th. which I'll have to post once I phone Van Isle Water to confirm the talk subject. According to the poster a Van Isle Water it is 1-4pm dealing with Grey water Collection and put on by Mayne Island Intergrated Water Society .$10.00. Roger
Hi Roger. Sorry that you are having trouble finding the Wakefield Beach development. This Globe & Mail site may be interesting http://m.theglobeandmail.com/life/h...g-new-followers/article122194/?service=mobile. There are also some homes for sale there so it is most strange that the realtor did not know of it. Perhaps Google Earth "Wakefield Beach Sechelt BC" or look on one of the map sites. As an aside this development is very near to Mason Road where the Sunshine Coast Botanical Garden is located. Hopefully your other leads are successful. Margaret
