Rhododendron thomsonii subsp. thomsonii

    I posted these photos in April in the Talk about the UBCBG forum. I was particularly taken with the prominent calyx tubes; Ron B mentioned that these are known for their bark. I see that Daniel Mosquin posted a bark photo in the December 9, 2005 POTD posting on this plant.

    On June 9, the calyxes remain and are still very striking. There are a few of these plants on this accession. Some have white bud scales and others pink (is that what those thin white and pink drooping parts are?). The sun was positioned well to appreciate the bark.
