I have a huge mature Rhododendron that appears to have layered itself. I want to remove the 'new' plant and relocate it. I would appreciate any advise on how to go about this procedure. Thank you. aliinbc
Layering happens when a plant "kneels" on the ground and developes its own root system, this plant can be severed from its parent plant once it has gained a root system that will support itself. once this root system is established ( timeline varies) it can be dug and transplanted. This can be a user induced method of propogation as well.
It takes time (couple years) to layer in, depending, but since you say they are already layered in, I assume a good root system is already established. Cut the branch from the main plant and then wait another year ... in early spring you can move to desired permanant location.
