My name is Karen and I live in Sydney and am new to this forum. My stag & elk horn mature plants appear to have rhizoctonia. (according to pictures on the internet). I researched fungacides to use and the only one that I can find in Australia is a product called Banrot (Everrus). The product Zyban has been recalled from Australia. Unfortunately it is only availabe in commercial quantities and costs $200, which I can't afford. Are there any other treatments or products that you know of that I could use. Thanks Karen
According to gardenguides.com website http://www.gardenguides.com/111920-problems-staghorn-ferns.html rhizoctonia is "Generally caused by excessive watering, the only treatment necessary may be a decrease in watering." What do you think?
Hi Sundrop Thanks for your advice. I had already reduced watering when I first thought the plant was just sunburnt. As well as the leaves turning brown on the ends, which seems to be creeping up the plant, there are a lot of black spots on the stag horn. The main body of the elk horn seems to have just died and turned into papery material with only 1 small area left. I tried spraying with rose black spot fungacide from Yates, but it didn't seem to help. I wanted to try and regraft the elk horn and thought that I should drench it first so I'm not transferring the fungus. I was going to take away most of the dead material. These ferns are about 60 - 65 years old. I will check out the website you have kindly provided. Many thanks Karen
