Nice link to some very good pictures of Dissectums, alot of super photos good to see them all in large one group selection. Now will all our dissectums grow into these fine specimens one can only wish (and hope)

    A few of my dissectums:
1/ Tamukeyama this just gets larger every year (rescued garden centre bargain basement buy £20-$15 7 years ago))

2/ Toyama nishiki bought this last year from a garden centre, hadn't been looked after very well and most of the branches were sweeping to the right and was in the smallest planter you could ever wish to see any Acer in.Thought this would have good potential for re planting and branch shaping back into a good dome shaped tree in two growing seasons so far so good (fingers crossed)

3/ Orangeola have struggled with this for nearly four years now,it's been in three different planters and one season in the ground had to lift last year because it looked terrible thought i would lose this one.
Good root prune new growing medium and 35 ltr container and new growing spot, this spring is the best i have ever seen this tree, lovely orange hue starting to appear so hopefully i have finally got this one sorted.

    Hi Roebuck,
I just bought a Toyama Nishiki 1 year graft today, together with Yasmin and Milligan.
Also bought home a large Sharps Pygmy and a beautiful unnamed 8year old Palmatum seedling which is stunning, will post a picture when I can.
I have orangeola growing in shade, planted in ground and its doing well and a lovely looking specimen.
I use Barthelemy Maples in Ferndown for many of my purchases, great source of well grown harder to find specimens

I also have obtained some very good maples from Barthelemy & Co, highly recommended for anyone living in the south of England.

For more of the Greer Gardens slideshows, in addition to the dissectum one, see this link:

Will look for Barthelemy & Co can't say that i know of them, alot of my stock came from Packhorse nursery in Derbyshire and Hippopottering nursery in north Lincs both very good suppliers of Acers, cannot say i am a great lover of alot of the new cultivars prefer the good old solid dependable varieties, saying that i would like a "Tiger rose" and "Olsens frosted strawberry" any ideas? nothing like that in the north to my knowledge.

maf ... Again good link to lovely pictures many thanks.

Thanks Maf, I hadn't found any further links to slide son their site.
Barthelemys is a real specialist maple nursery, with great advice. They graft many of their own plants(not all) and have some real choice naturally grown specimens with great character.

Its easy with the tried and tested varieties to research and find pictures of their mature growth habits, and many new varieties leave a lot to be desired in terms of growth habit.
However Barthelemys have a wide range of 1 year grafts at £10 each or less if buying a quantity so whenever I pick up larger well known cultivars, I always view the 1 year grafts for anything different worth taking a chance on.

Roebuk, they've just potted up their new stock so won't let them out until they've settled in.I too have had quite a few plants from Barthelemy Jaybee.I'd love to pay them a visit one day, perhaps during a holiday this year.I asked them about a couple of oldies earlier(Tatsuka&Takao)but they've stopped grafting them thru lack of demand.Wether or not they still have larger specimens which they can't deliver I don't know.As you say though,Mathew is always very helpful and always gives advice freely.

They tell me they graft about 30,000 maples a year. They do have a lot of older specimens around their grounds, these are not marked for sale but I guess would be.
They do import some of the more common specimens, but are great for naturally grown unusual varities with lots of character.
It's definitely not a garden center, but well worth a look around. I have bought from them over many years and have never been disapointed.
One other nursery I visited recently was Mallett court, but although they have an extensive catalogue online, most of the cultivars are not on their site and I guess are bought in to order. However I did pick up a 3 or 4 maples I had on my wanted list.

Good to know thanks, that one is on my wish list too and I like Hippopottering's maples, their trees always do well here. I am thinking about making an order with Esveld from Holland and they have it available also.

Hippo's Japanese maples are (or as recently as last year) grafted by Dick Van der Maat and his wife, on site at Hippo. I don't know if Dick provides any or some scion wood for the grafts, although certainly some of the parent plants would have come from his nursery, nor where the understock comes from. These are top quality grafts, and although there's the usual mortality rate with 1-2 year grafts, there is every chance that they'll grow into trouble free specimens (given the usual caveats!)

Mallet Court outsources grafting also although I don't know who does it for them (it might be Dick as well). I have had only excellent quality from them, which is expected given that J.G.S Harris is a noted maple expert, author and VP in the Maple Society. Not to mention a great plantsman. I'd love to be able to get more maples from him, but it's complicated to get them to France.

IMHO the Van der Maat grafts are superior to Esveld, but it may not make too much difference with an older plant. I think Esveld now uses EM too.

Just in case you guys don't know it there is another "proper" nursery doing maples in Taunton, Karan Junker: http://www.junker.co.uk. They used to do their own grafting, I don't know whether that's still the case.

    Ugh, it's hailing outside... :(

Oh I didn't know the Vandermaats did the grafting though I noticed they have a lot of his cultivars. They said if they ever get another stock plant of 'Geisha' they'll graft it and let me know(just can't get hold of one anywhere)so perhaps they do some themselves?
Junker always seemed to list the rare(in UK) and often the only nursery to stock some cultivars though I've never dealt with her.Interestingly Hippos will be selling one of hers later this year so they're all connected :)

Well would you belive it was actually in Shaftsbury Dorset 3 weeks ago on a pleasure trip. Looking at the map could have easily made a detour very close. If only i knew about them !!!!! never mind 9 hour round trip cannot just nip back.

Looked on their site though very nice plus good selection of shrubs /trees.

Mr Harris spent time with me and was very helpful when it came to choosing specimens. He did however mention that nowadays they buy a lot of the cultivars in to order. They were well grown and in large pots for their size, 10 litre and well rooted.
