I am new to gardening, but contemplating the addition of a grape vine to my backyard garden this year. I have so many questions, I don't even know where to start. 1. Should I prepare the soil in any particular way? 2. Can anyone suggest a seedless variety suitable for eating? 3. Do I need to order the seeds/vine online or will my local nursery carry something I can use? 4. Should I be looking at seeds or an existing vine? 5. Do I need to build/buy a trellis or support for the vine? I have lots to learn. :) I live in Indianapolis, Indiana - zone 6, I believe. Thanks so much!
Choose sunny spot with well-drained soil and plant in existing soil. Do not modify planting hole backfill. Mulch with wood chips or comparable material after planting. Locally suitable named selections obtained from outlets as rooted cuttings. Not grown from seed. Substantial support (stout arbor or trellis) required. If pruning heavily and keeping small, as in a vineyard then posts with horizontal wires adequate.
Thank you for the response. After doing a little research, I'm planning on trying a Vanessa vine this year. Hopefully my wife and young daughter will enjoy the seedless grapes.
One other question. Does anyone have suggestions on where I should purchase rooted cuttings, as RonB suggests? As of right now, this is the best site I could find: http://www.rakgrape.com/ They seem to have good info and lots of choices. Thanks for the help!
