All winter I have been planning on repotting my green lace leaf Japanese maple and have been watching for the buds to swell. Well work got busy blah blah blah and now I'm wondering if it's to late the buds have broken. So I was wondering if it's to late and looking for advise on what to do. I live in Northern Ca. Zone 9 where lately it's been spring one day and back to our winter weather the next.

If your just putting it into a bigger pot then your ok. Don't be cutting roots.

    For what it's worth:

Some Japanese bonsai professionals repot their A. palmatum in June, when they're in full leaf.

1/ they're potted trees, of a limited size (usually no more than 60 cm high, even if they are 50 years old)
2/ June is usually a very wet season in Japan - if your climate is on the dry side, better not try it
3/ I've tried it here when June was very rainy and moderately mild (no more than 18-19 ° C in the afternoon) with success.

This is for bonsai: trimming the roots (without removing the leaves) leads to shorter internodes and the tree stays very healthy.

If you read French, I can scan and send the original article to anyone interested.

Sorry about the repost. I went ahead and did the repot with just minimal root prpruning.I would have liked to have waited but I was afraid my poor tree was going to run out of dirt. Its gotten colder with a storm coming through so the trees have slowed down a touch so I think it will be fine.
