Hi, I was wondering is there a time frame when a grape vine should be planted into the ground becausr now it's in a flower pot. I started with a clipping of Nebbiolo and now it has about 3 leaves on the vine... I was wondering should i plant it now or wait can someone please advise me. Thanks
Now is good. Usually not recommended to plant in July and August, then OK again in the fall. Fall planting may be different for you from us West Coast types because of your winter deep freezes. Ralph
Thanks that is what I will be doing this wkend, but I recieved this cutting Nebbiolo from a friend who has a vineyatd in Niagara and he has produced wine from the vine. I think it has adapted to Toronto climate do you think I should still graft the vine or should I just leave it the way it is and let the vine grow on it's own, please advise. Thanks again
I would plant it now as it is. You may have a hard time finding a suitable rootstock and in any event that is something you can do with cuttings from this plant in the future. Ask your friend if his are growing own rooted or on what rootstock. Rootstocks are selected usually for the primary purpose of resistance to phylloxera and secondly for the specific soil conditions and to enhance or reduce vigor and in your case to advance ripening as Nebbiolo is a later ripening variety. I think it more likely that your friend has adapted his wine making techniques than this variety has "adapted" to the Toronto climate, although he will obviously have taken this cutting from a vine that has proven itself by surviving the Ontario winters.
