The other 3 Favourite pins are also in full bloom. Along 22nd, from Rupert to Windermere, and another stretch between Renfrew to Nanaimo. Along 24th from Windermere towards Nootka. Along 27th from Nootka towards the East.
Ukon at 15th and Nootka are in bloom. Favourite pin ID 1769. There's a nice relatively new row of Kanzans on Nootka at the intersection of 15th too. Give them a few years and they will get bigger.
Yong, is it only in the photo that the leaves on the closest tree look more purple than the others? See @Anne Eng's posting of 'Royal Burgundy' at VanDusen posted at https://forums.botanicalgarden.ubc.ca/threads/shaughnessy.36222/page-11#post-436926.
Think it's the lighting as it looked more copper than the ones spotted in White Rock. But i'll double check!
'Ama-no-gawa' on the east side of Nanaimo, south of E. 29 has passed peak bloom at May 2, 2023. Looking very vigorous and fastigiate.
The two 'Shogetsu' trees on the east side of Wales, south of Kingsway (Norquay Park) are in young and splendid full bloom at May 3, 2023.
Unable to find this Shogetsu. There's a dead-looking cherry tree in the house though so that might be the Shogetsu unfortunately ID.3184
Shirofugen at Rupert and Broadway are at the special timing where you can see every colour of the different phases haha.. convenient location too near skytrain
It may not be Wendy's favourite cherry, and it's entirely too modest and inconspicuous for its own good, but the 'Autumnalis Rosea' in front of the McDonald's, on the north east corner of Grandview Highway and Renfrew, is blooming now at December 11, 2023, right near the end of the tenth lunar month.
I just drove by there on Friday.....I had no idea there was a cherry tree there. Will have to look next time!
Lisa, right across from McDonald's is another cherry tree. It's the later blooming 'Shirotae' in the little mall on the northwest corner of Grandview Highway and Renfrew, as per this link #16. Look away!
The 'Somei-Yoshino' trees in the yard of Windermere Secondary (Windermere and E.27) are at peak bloom on March 25, 2024. The blossoms on a few tree are especially large for 'Somei-Yoshino' trees. They look almost 'Akebono' size. In fact, have we been mistaken all these years, that they are all 'Somei-Yoshino'?
I don't think we were mistaken, though I might have been the one who named them originally. Here is a posting I did 14 years ago: https://forums.botanicalgarden.ubc.ca/threads/renfrew-collingwood.37755/page-2#post-248980. There is an 'Akebono' in that same posting that looks quite different. I'm starting to notice a lot of right angles in 'Somei-yoshino' structure, while 'Akebono' limbs seem generally to stretch outward. For instance, see @Willard's posting in Kerrisdale at https://forums.botanicalgarden.ubc.ca/threads/kerrisdale.36008/page-8#post-441931. 'Akebono' branches seem more delicate. I know I have made some postings where I mentioned how large some of the 'Somei-yoshino' flowers were. The stars in the second-to-last photo look appropriate for 'Somei-yoshino'.
The two trees of 'Shirotae' are in full bloom at the main entrance of Three Links Care Society, SE corner of E. 22nd and Renfrew, on March 30, 2024.
The 'Washi-no-o' trees along the west side of Nootka and E. 25th, are past peak bloom at April 4, 2024.
The 'Ukon' trees on the south side of E. 15th, east of Renfrew are approaching full bloom at April 4, 2024.
The two 'Shogetsu' trees on the east side of Wales, south of Kingsway (Norquay Park) are in full bloom at April 19, 2024. Blooming a little sparser compared to last year's May 3.
