Looking for a common subtropical plant name, house plant here used for ornamental purposes. One can buy it in the florist stores in New York, I hear. I do not know the Latin or common name, but it has got ordinary sized rather spongy-looking red leaves. So, it’s red and purple instead of green. Reportedly, it is very strongly alkaline. It is native to Peru and surrounding countries, about 30 cm high. Does this ring a bell and would anyone know the name of it? Appreciate your time, effort and expertise.
Re: Red-purple plant id - Peru So far found out it should be a succulent not unlike a Schwarzkopf. Mineral present in this succulent would be calcium oxalate monohydrate (whewellite, CaC2O4 x H2O). Or like Aeonium arboreum 'Tip Top' - Dwarf Tree Aeonium. The one I am looking for is native to Peru and surrounding countries; going north as well not sure how far.
Aeonium arboreum 'Atropurpureum'; Aeonium 'Garnets'; Aeonium balsamiferum, sticky leaves; Aeonium arboreum 'Atropurpureum'; Aeonium arboreum 'Zwartkops'; Aeonium tabuliformes; Aeonium 'Cyclops'; Aeonium 'Cyclops' and 'Voodoo'; Aeonium spathulatum. I would like to have two small leaves of any of the above plants. Should be dark-red in colour and meant for chromatography analysis in Ottawa. Will pay for mailing etc...Wilfred
