Hello, I planted a red-osier dogwood seedling (from UBC botanical garden) early this spring. It has grown vigorously, but in recent weeks rounded patches have been eaten out of its leaves. It seemed okay nonetheless (able to weather this problem), but now something is cutting the stem of each leaf off near the base of the leafy area. The leaf doesn't fall off right away, but instead sags down and wilts. At the current rate, all the leaves will be like this in a week! I'd appreciate any ideas about what it is and what to do (probably something common, but I'm relatively new to gardening). Thank you! Ken
I think I've found the answer to my own question. It appears that the leaf damage is being caused by an amazing insect called the leaf-cutter bee. If you're interested, take a look at crawford.tardigrade.net/bugs/bugofmonth23.html. It seems that they don't cause severe damage. Ken
