Hi, I'm new here and new to gardening. What I'm wondering is how to tell the difference between a red or yellow paw paw/papaya tree. We've just bought a property which has quite a few of both, but by looking at the plant we can't see a difference - until you cut it open.
I have been told that they are the same, the red one has just been left to ripen longer, but I really don't know how truthful that would be.
Also is paw paw and papaya the same?

    Howdy Sendara,
Down Under, they call papaya as pawpaw. I don't know if there is anyway of telling a yellow meated pawpaw from a red meated type. Generally the small pear shape fruit has yellow meat. Also the yellow meated has a stronger and more intense aroma.
    Peace

Thank you. The guy we bought the place off just told us we had red and yellow paw paws, so when i did some research online I was just so bewildered about papayas and all that sort of stuff. It's nice to know it's an Aussie thing - that we just call them the same thing. Most of the trees seem to be producing smallish, sort of ball shaped, fruit - only a few are ripe at the moment (so we are slowly working out what plant is what). Thanks for the tips about size and smell - i had no idea about that.
