Red leaf / stem gall on kinnikinnick

The following was received via email:

My problem:
Planted some Kinniknick ground cover (from UBC derived research) along driveway side and retaining wall, but noticed increasing abundance of a red leaf (and stem) gall these past few years (this year it's the worst).
Attached pdf fills in some background, and one attached jpg at higher resolution is for your examination.
Currently dealing w/ it by pruning the branches off and disposing in garbage and washing hands as was advised it's fungus derived.
Will follow this up when I return home after field work in 4 weeks time.
