Can anyone help identify this shrub? Sorry, it isn't in full bloom. It starts out with berry-like fruit that open as blossoms. We originally cut this plant down as it was really ragged. What you see is just one season of regrowth and is a beautiful plant we now want to keep.
The bud and bloom sure look like a crape myrtle. The leaves even look like one, except for the dark red color. I can't find a variety of crape myrtle with dark red leaves, but I'd bet that's what you have. The "berry" is the flower bud.
Looking at some others online ( http://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/plantanswers/trees/crapemyrtle/crape_myrtle_varieties.html ), I think you are right. The Red Rocket or Dynamite Crepe Myrtles may be a candidate although the stems and leaves do not look as red as ours. That may be just because of the time of year? Thanks a bunch.
