Can anyone help identify this shrub? Sorry, it isn't in full bloom. It starts out with berry-like fruit that open as blossoms. We originally cut this plant down as it was really ragged. What you see is just one season of regrowth and is a beautiful plant we now want to keep.

The bud and bloom sure look like a crape myrtle. The leaves even look like one, except for the dark red color. I can't find a variety of crape myrtle with dark red leaves, but I'd bet that's what you have.

The "berry" is the flower bud.
