Can somebody please help me identify this plant ?
It is a large (about 6'tall) shrub, the berries grow on single, short (up to 1")
    stems along the branches.
They have a small, cherry-like pit inside, and smell like cherries.
    Are the berries edible ?
I am in Chicago, IL suburbs.

    Thank you in advance !

Looks like a Cornelian cherry, Cornus mas. Maybe they would have fruit already where you are, but these would not fruit until late summer or fall here. Cornelian cherries taste very much like pie cherries.
