I have found a beautiful little tree on my property. It is still small, waist high. It has very shiny red bark and leaves that are opposite, serrated edges, pointy with some double serrations. The leaf stem is reddish too. Can anybody tell me what tree this is?

no it does not have serrated edges. The edges are entire. Might it be a dogwood tree?

    Welcome Caroljeanb.
A pic would be really helpful.
It may be Cornus alba Siberica. The red stemmed dogwood. However, I would describe it as more shrub like, than a tree, as it normally has several branches coming from low down, rather than a single trunk.
I would expect it to have white flowers at the moment. ( see 2nd link)

You could do the leaf test to see if it is a Cornus. Scroll down this site for pic.
