I recently went to a nursery sale where I found red banana trees. I bought 4 of them. I planted 2 next to my green banana trees and left 2 in pots after repotting of course, as they were root bound from the nursery. I am also told from the nursery that these will produce fruit. there is one green leaf on tree, however, after a couple days the leaf will turn red. Now on all the leafs the tops are green and the bottoms red, as well as the trunk.

The 2 trees in the ground are healthy but have not grown 1 inch. The 2 in pots have produced at least 3 new leaves already.

First question. Are these trees not suitable for being in the ground?
Second question. Is the red banana edible?

Looks like you have a 'Siam Ruby' which does produce edible fruits, yes. They're yellow, though. The ones in-ground will take a couple of weeks to get used to that situation, before putting out new growth.

Could you possibly take a photo of the tops of the leaves and display it here? Lorax certainly knows alot more about nanners than I do; however, I'm not convinced that your plant is a SR without seeing the tops of the leaves.
