Hi, I'm new to this so I'm posting on the Hort Board. I am looking to provide a pleasant update to the exterior of a 2.5 story brick building in Winnipeg MB. I am currently looking at vines growing on the exterior of the building as an attractive option. However I have a few questions about them. What are some vines that are good to grow in a MB climate (preferably low maintenance)? (I've heard Virginia Creeper is beautiful in the fall) Are there many problems related to a vine's root system cracking the foundation or cracking through the mortar joints on a house? If so are there preventative measures that can be taken? Can growth be controlled with wooden ladders/grid? Are there any other problems with growing vines on the side of a building that I should be aware of? Thanks
As for the possibilities, check out the vines section in the Jeffries Nurseries catalogue. I don't think any of the vines that are possibilities can cause problems with building foundations.
