I am planning to plant a fig tree right away. Since it is mid October and I live in Portland Oregon, do I need to wrap the tree for the winter? Should I hold off until spring to plant?

Supposing that you are in Zone 5 or 6. Let the tree become dormant i.e. let it drop the leaves naturally and then bring it to a cool dark place for storage where temperature would not go below freezing for until spring when the outside temperatures are in teens and you see the begiining of leaves buds on local trees. Then bring the fig tree in the pot outside. Make sure that you protect it if there is frost forecast after bringing the tree out. Keep eye on the soil moisture during dormany storage. The soil should not dry up totally. Periodically you can water it with cold water. Sometimes some trees may start sprouting leaves in the storage area. If that happens bring the tree to a sunny are inside the house until it is safe outside.

Portland is Sunset 6/USDA 8. Plant now. Mulch after planting.
