Does any one have any knowledge on how to trim old grape vines? The vines in question are 100 years old or so and located in Berks County Pennsylvania. They are old and overgrown. If the woody part of the vine is cut about two feet or so from where it comes out of the ground, during time of dormancy, will new growth start or will that kill the vines. I would appreciate any knowledge or feedback that any one might be able to share. I will also be attempting to plant some new vines in my yard. I am completely unfamiliar with growing of grapes and could use any useful knowledge.
As far as I know, you can hack them to pieces and never get rid of them! But a 100 yr old vine? I'd do some serious research.
