We need to re-pot a healthy 4-foot fiddle leaf fig that is growing well indoors.. Will it hurt it to put it in a slightly smaller containter. A larger one?

If you have to put it in a smaller container, you must cut back old, woody, encircling roots by 1/4 to 1/3, or it won't fit comfortably in the new pot or live very long if you do manage to stuff it in. But definitely a slightly larger container is much more preferable as long as it's not hugely larger.
