When do Raspberry Canes need to be replaced? Should individual canes be replaced or all if planted at the same time.? We live in Whistler and at times have a problem with black bears.

I have been cutting out the old cane as mentioned but now about half of the plants are very small(about 3feet max) an look llike they have run out of gas. I had heard that this could happen after 6 or7 years?

Did you feed them, water when dry, even cultivate soil and mulch? I can honestly say have never seen them die out.We had a rasberry pen when I lived at home that was over twenty years in production. I am sure they were the same rows of canes just pruned out fed etc and tied up each year. They also used to make lots of runners and nick off out of the enclosed space. When I grew them here in my current home I actually had to get the goats in to prune the excess growth where they were getting nearly as bad as our wild blackberries. Both plots were grown on acidic soil (basalt base)that was well fed with manures before original planting.
