Racemes of tiny white flowers at UBCBG

    These very very fragrant (maybe too fragrant) shrubs are growing in the Carolinian garden at UBCBG (grove opposite to the sign for the Bartram Grove). I thought poke weed, but now that I see photos of that, I think not. Eric La Fountaine said there's Itea virginica (sweetspire) growing in the area, but on that genus, narrower petals are the same length as the different stamen and pistil structure in the flower centres, while the stamens here are a lot longer than the wider, inward-curving petals. Five petals, white stamens and pistil, very pale pink stems and calyxes, little green leafy-looking bract things at the base of each flower petiole. Leaves alternate, ovate, emarginate.

    Yes, I'm sure there's a sign (probably several of them), but I couldn't find it. The fourth photo shows the spent flowers on the left - very different from poke weed.

    Looks like Clethera sp.
    Flowering now with a beautiful scent.
