I'm looking into some Banana Trees. Does anyone have some that actually get Banana off of? Does the indoor Banana Trees have Banana? I have been looking at these http://www.gardenerschoice.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=99&dc=leader Does anyone know anything about these?? Any info would be helpful.. THANKS!!
Well, for starters, "Yellow Banana" could mean one of any number of cultivars. Most probably, though, it's a Cavendish or Dwarf Cavendish. If that is what it is, then yes, provided it's got a big enough pot and that you take care of it, it will eventually fruit for you. The ad is offering 6" long, 8 oz bananas, which makes me think it's a full-sized Cavendish; make sure you have tall ceilings before you buy that one. A healthy banana tree is a gift to yourself that keeps on giving. The ad doesn't mention that your tree will die after it fruits, but it also doesn't mention pups, which are little daughter sprouts of your tree. So basically, you only have to buy a banana once, and you will have them for life. If you're really serious about growing bananas indoors, I'd reccomend that you join the forums of the International Banana Society - they are very very friendly folks, many of whom grow their bananas indoors, and some of whom are growing bananas outdoors as far north as Canada. Along with being extremely knowledgable about bananas, they trade plants; you may be able to find a member close to where you live, and then the plants you get will be far more reliable. They'll also be able to tell you whether gardener's choice is a good site to order from, and positively ID your bananas when you get them. Best of luck - I grow bananas outdoors, and they quickly become a plant that you can't just have one of....
Thanks so much for your reply. I will check into the Link. My husband has been wanting a Banana Tree forever now. So I thought I would check into them. Are they hard to grow outside?? Thanks for all your help
What zone is South Carolina in? If you get snow you'll have to mulch them over and protect them, but there are cold-hardy varieties, like Basjoo, that should do fine.
You could probably get bananas from a dwarf orinoco. We get them quite frequently here in Charleston.
