Some important botanical clarification needed here - the species mentioned by Daniel are rowans (Sorbus), not ashes (Fraxinus). The only ash native in BC is Fraxinus latifolia, but it is only native in the southwest of BC, not the northwest.
Thank you both for your replies. I've determined that the tree I refered to is Sorbus scopulina. By any chance would you know if the wood is suitable for smoking meat and/or fish?
Might be so used in some places, but I've not come across it before. The old tradition in Europe is to use alder wood, but modern European smokeries mostly use oak, sometimes beech. I doubt it makes a lot of difference (as long as you avoid Oleander!).
