Does anyone have impressions of or experience with Quercus phillyreoides? I am looking for a broadleaf evergreen that will look somewhat muscular with age, grow around 40' but not too broad. Suggestions welcome
Ubame oak can sometimes be a bit tender here. Probably not muscular or tree-like enough for you, tallest one in Seattle arboretum (planted 1951) still not 40' high as of several years ago. Best bet for you might be canyon live oak, native as far north as Oregon and at one time represented by a prominently located, robust specimen at the Carl English Garden in Seattle. Other big (for us) examples known from Big Lake, east of Mt Vernon, where it probably gets pretty cold.
