I am looking for some feedback from anyone with an opinion on our soil types and if grapes are suitable for production. We have had a capability assessment done and there are two key types of soil on our property. Quennell and Kaptara. The Kaptara soils are rated as class 3 due to wetness and improvable to class3 through drainage. The Quennell soils are rated class 3a (aridity) and 4p (stoniness) but are improvable to class1or2 via irrigation. This is a gravelly sandy soil. We live in an arid area near the SpiderLake/Horne Lake interchange I can e-mail the capability assessment if there is anyone willing to have a look at it. I am considering grape production but am open to other suggestions if there is a more suitable crop for our situation.
Kaptara is described as marginal, found in pockets associated with Quennel, described as marginal to unsuitable. One is poorly drained, the other is too well drained and has low nutrient and water holding capacity. It will be an uphill battle but if you have water, grapes would be something to consider. You might add a year or two to the usual expectations to allow extra rooting time. I know at least one of your neighbors is considering wine grapes, or is this you John? Ralph
There is plenty of water here and I believe your right that John is considering this as well. I am down the road from him by a mile or so. Would you be interested in having a look at the assessmentÉ My email is pauls"hughes.net if you want to look off the forum. Thanks for the reply
