I have 2 good sized pyracantha's (firethorn) on my wooden fence (south facing yard) that have taken a beating with our severe winter here on Vancouver Island and they are looking very black. Can't tell yet if they are toast until the snow clears and I can get to see the base of the plants for any kind of life. Does anyone have similar looking ones at the moment?

Different forms vary in hardiness. Some are not very hardy.
