Puzzling Minnesota perennial

Formed a large clump. Twelve to 18 inches tall. Hairy stems. Top most leaves stained red.

 

For best chance at accurate recognition show in bloom

 

Good point Ron, but time is of the essence in this case. In bloom, we might be able to identify the plant too.

Any guesses?

 

Might the plant be a kind of Mirabilis?

 

If not flowers as Ron suggested, post just more pictures please, more details of stem, leaves, close-up of what is it on top of the stems, etc., -- help us make our guesses more reliable.

 

Alternate leaves. Stems and leaves hairy. Does this help?

 

Local consensus now is a kind of Oenothera. If not, what are other possibilities? If so, can anyone suggest what species/cultivar?
