I'd like to put a raised rock bed, approximately 2 feet deep, around the base of a large established Douglas Fir. Some of the roots of this tree are slightly exposed and grass doesn't grow under the tree well and mowing is difficult - thus the desire for a raised bed for rocks and drift wood etc. The bed might extend out from the base of the tree approximate 5 to 10 feet...
Will this be a problem for the tree? The tree is really tall, maybe 100 feet.
    Thanks for your ideas.

Not a good idea - those roots need to be on the surface for aerated soil. Bury them, and you risk killing the tree.

Thanks very much - I had heard something about the roots needing to be near the surface and was concerned about covering them.
