    Any ideas about this?

I am in southern Alabama, by the way.

Looks like a Salvia to me, maybe Salvia lyrata. Photos are not very clear and leaves would also help. Don't know about the spotted stem though?

Looks like Salvia lyrata to me, too. It will have a rosette of leaves (where the lyre part of the name comes in) that may be all green, or green with maroon midribs, or even all dark reddish brown, somewhat dependent on sunlight. When it's naturalized, it will give a lovely heathery purple glow to the distant swaths of roadside weeds. Probably no more than a foot high scapes. As far as spotted stem, sometimes it will be pigmented as the leaves, with lesser or stronger anthcyanin presence.
