When would be the ideal time to transplant a 3 yr old Purple Smoke Bush and what specific steps should be taken? Thank you

Early spring just before buds open. Don't plant it any deeper than it is now. Do water well (every couple of days deeply) throughout the summer unless you get rain. Put it in good light, and not in clay soil, but somewhere with good drainage.

USDA 6 and warmer: Autumn, right after leaf drop. Spring is actually a poor time to plant, should be used only where subjects being planted will freeze and die if planted in autumn.
