    Hoping someone can help me.

I was ID'ing trees at a friends property in San Diego and came across a number of small (10-15') purple-leafed trees. The leaves are spade-shaped (slightly heart shaped) and leaf size is slightly large (about the size of the palm of the hand without the fingers). This is not a purple-leafed plum, although the leaf color is very similar. Unfortunately I don't have a photo. Any ideas?

I don't believe it's Cotinus coggyria, unfortunately. After doing some research, I believe it might be Eastern Redbud "Forest Pansy". But is it odd to have an Eastern Redbud on the west coast?
