Puple Flower Bud in NE Pennsylvania

    I was hiking today in upstate PA near the NY boarder and encountered a wild plant with numerous deep purple buds that look like they will flower within a few days. This plant was about 12 inches in lenght. I am in the woods frequently and don't remember seeing this plant. Also, there were no other plants of this type during my rather extensive hike in the area If you can identify, please post and/or send me an e-mail to NFG964@aol.com
    I'd also know how to obtain seed from this plant. Thanks

    It's a gentian sp., probably Gentiana clausa, which is native to Pennsylvania.

    By the way, if it is Gentiana clausa, it may not "open up" as one might expect it to... the petals barely part. The common names are "closed gentian", and "bottle gentian".
