What can I do to prevent mice and other rodents from eating the young pumpkins and squash before they get a chance to grow?

I think you have to cage the plants with wire mesh. They will chew on the developing fruit as well. Mice can get through small holes, so can rats for that matter. Outdoor cats discourage rodents, but they kill songbirds so... Traps will help, but they rodents are smart and it's hard to eradicate them. New ones will take there place.
