    Hi,

I've been trying (rather unsuccessfully) for some time to acquire a few akebono flowering cherry trees. I'm in the Maritimes (New Brunswick) and trees such as this are basically non-existent among the nurseries out here. Have even asked several to order some in from growers elsewhere with no luck.

Just wondering if anyone on the site is aware of a nursery/ grower who ships small Akebonos (5-10 gallon or even seedlings) within Canada.

    Will it grow there?

I suspect it would but really can't say for sure as I've never seen one here.

We're zone 5 here in south-eastern New Brunswick. I've seen references on the net that suggest the Akebono grows within zones 5 to 9, however I'm far from an expert on this subject. Lots of Kwanzans for sale in nurseries out here.

So - am in Abbots ford this week and had a chance to view the Akebono in person at one of the local nurseries (plus enjoyed some fabulous sushi). The trees were taller than I expected and I asked the owner of the nursery if he had anything smaller that I could more easily ship back to New Brunswick.

He subsequently advised me that the majority of these trees are 'grafted' at 6 feet and that I would not be able to find anything smaller than this. Rather disappointing. Guess I'll have to switch to a different type of flowing cherry that is available to my area (i.e. Kwanzan).

If you see some 'Akebono' in fruit on local streets while you are here take some of those back and plant them, you may get similar seedlings. Parts of this web site that talk about Vancouver's Japanese flowering cherries give numerous locations for street trees.
